The EEOB has been called a masterpiece of French Second Empire style yet has had its share of critics as it looks much different than most government buildings in the nation’s capital. The granite, slate and cast-iron exterior has stood for more than 150 years, and originally housed the departments of State, War, and the Navy.
Originally designed as the War Department Library, the room was designed by Richard von Ezdorf and completed in 1887. Ezdorf selected an eclectic mix of the French Renaissance, Classical, and Gothic Revival styles. Mixing elements of these styles was very popular in the late 19th Century, and became characteristic of the high Victorian style.
